Fox News, "You Lie"

Oh what a tangled web we weave..."The Washington Post ran a full-page instigating ad in today's paper from Fox News that asks: "How Did ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC And CNN Miss This Story?" referring to the D.C. tea party protests on 9/12."Wrong on all counts:"NBC News had crews on the mall...A Nightly News spokesperson tells TVNewser, "and more than 5.2 million viewers watched our coverage." It was Weekend Nightly's best Total Viewer delivery since April....

Tracking Civility

It's funny, but sometimes when we think about civility in politcs we often consider our times to be the least civil. I was listening to America Left on XM yesterday and they reminded me of some things I had forgotten. Everyone knows about the famous duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Fewer know about the beating done in South Carolina (yup there they go again. I hate using Wikipedia, but it is a well-known...

Rush Limbaugh: Race-Baiter-In-Chief

Never one to let an opportunity to spew his hatred and play upon the ignorance and bigotry of his listening audience pass by, Republican Party spokesman and race-baiter-in-chief Rush Limbaugh said on his radio program yesterday about the incident on a Belleville, Illinois schoolbus:"It's Obama's America, is it not? Obama's America, white kids getting beat up on school buses now. You put your kids on a school bus, you expect safety but in Obama's America...
As a sideline to Scott's earlier blog, it turns out some of those aerial photos of the protesters that descended upon Washington, D.C. this weekend might be fake.  At least one is.  The photograph shown here was touted by Say Anything, a conservative blog, as reasonable justification for the claim of 1,000,000 attendees.    A sharp reader on the site posted the following photograph, proving that the above picture was taken before the National Museum of the American...

Are the White Coats far behind?

Sometimes I catch myself saying that Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilly are stupid racists pedaling ignorance. The fact is that I got half of that right. They are pedaling ignorance, but I believe those people know exactly what they are doing. We on the left (or center) complain incessantly about them while they run all the way to the bank. Their party is shrinking and they are still laughing at home with their...

Where's the leadership?

Though I don't necessarily agree with some of the political goals of President Andrew Shepherd in the modern classic, The American President, I have always loved that film for its expression of what American politics OUGHT to be.The character of Lewis Rothschild, played by Michael J. Fox, is worth the price of admission alone.  After weeks of character attacks by the President's opponent with no comment from the White House, Lewis makes an impassioned plea...

Ronald Reagan's "Indoctrination" of American Schoolchildren

As a bright and shining example of the outright lies and blatant hypocrisy coming from the far-right over what they have concocted in their tiny, narrow minds as what is going to be President Obama's "indoctrination" of schoolchildren in his remarks next week, I give you the Michael Savage show from yesterday:"The first president in American history who is going to force children to listen to a speech he's going to give.""No American president in...

Thank Goodness for Marketing People

I have had the inestimable pleasure from time to time of watching animated and live action children's movies with my kids. As has always been true, there is as much in them for adults as there is for the kids. Think Popeye, Aladdin, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia ... lots of political, religious, social commentary there.I had been putting off watching the movie Wall-E because at some point, I felt...

More About Communication

I'm generally in a more chipper mood today, so I thought I would focus on what the Democrats should do instead of what the Republicans are doing. In a past life I was an assistant debate coach. My duties pretty much were generally relegated to driving the bus and serving as an occasional judge, but I learned a thing or two about debate during those two years. Most people recognize two kinds of debate (Lincoln-Douglass...
According to an article on the Huffington Post, Glenn Beck's accusation that Obama is a racist is costing Glenn Beck's time slot on Fox News some major advertisers. Among these advertisers are the consumer goods conglomerate Proctor & Gamble and Progressive Insurance. They've not abandoned Fox just yet; but they have requested that none of their ads run in Beck's time slot.  I'm personally disappointed they didn't pull their advertising before Glenn Beck had Michael Schueur on...
