This morning, I accompanied a television crew on a private boat trip to see the oil recovery operations up close and to get a sense of the effect of the blowout of BP's Mississippi Canyon Block 252 well 60 days ago.  We headed out of Venice about 7:30 am, headed down the Mississippi River following the fleet of boats of opportunity (crewed by the small people), who were going on station to boom up oil....
This afternoon, I was driving around Venice and got the first glimpse of what authorities here are dealing with.  Have a look:Later, I was having a beer in a local bar when a group of young hazmat workers came in.  Several were enamored with the iPad I was using, and we struck up a conversation.  One was very conversational until I brought up how much oil was threatening the coast.  He immediately clammed up, shifting...
Video blogging on the way to Venice:...
Got to Venice a couple of hours ago, driving in from New Orleans.  As I drove down Highway 23, which parallels the Mississippi River, to the "end of the world", as a friend calls it, the activity picked up as the miles clicked off.  The helicopters came into view at about 35 miles out.  Coast Guard, Army and private helicopters were hauling supplies, boom, and people out to where the oil is.  As I drew...
I'm off to Venice, Louisiana at dark thirty tomorrow morning to see the damage for myself.  I'll be live blogging from there as I tour the area.   More tomorrow....
Updated:  BP BlinksLast night, President Obama gave his first Oval Office speech to address the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico just hours after a new government report that BP's blowout well is now estimated to be flowing as much as 60,000 barrels of oil per day, or the equivalent of an Exxon Valdez running aground 50 miles offshore Louisiana every 4 days.  Yes, every 4 days, even after 58 days of uncontrolled flow.  The...
Yesterday, I was on Squeeze Play, BNN's afternoon market closing show, talking about the oil spill.  I can't embed their feed, so here's the link....
I was on MSNBC last night with Rachel Maddow, talking about the deepwater moratorium.  Have a look:Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy...
Shortly after the BP's Mississippi Canyon Block 252 well blew out, President Obama imposed a six month moratorium on deepwater drilling, pending conclusions and recommendations from investigations of the disaster that has once again put a laser beam on the fragility of our oil supply.  Howls from the industry immediately ensued, followed very quickly by Gulf states politicians, who are big recipients of oil industry campaign contributions.  Workers and contractors, who will be the ones...

Same song, different verse:"A leak from Chevron's underground oil pipeline may have gone undetected for hours as it spilled 50 gallons of crude a minute Saturday into Salt Lake City's Red Butte Creek...Chevron pledged to clean up the 6-mile mess, but the company could not quantify he damage. As of late Saturday, Chevron said the leak had been stopped. But company representatives could not say when it began, how much oil spilled into city waterways...
