In this smoking gun curriculum document from the Texas Education Agency, proof positive is found that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is indoctrinating our children.  Each day they are required to recite the following oaths of allegiance to the United States of America and to the State of Texas. The oaths of "Allegiance" are as follows: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which...

An Opportunity Denied

This topic has been taken twice over, but I thought I would look at it from a different perspective. President Obama will be addressing some school children on Tuesday, but it could have been all school children. Unfortunately, the "loyal opposition" hasn't been loyal from the beginning. In many ways, I was shocked to hear about the opposition to this, but in some ways I wasn't shocked at all. The opposition has been opposing EVERYTHING...
This past summer, the legislature had a choice to make in education. Those of us that coached UIL sports wanted the legislature to approve a switch allowing districts to give credit to athletes in all eight semesters of high school. Currently, students are only required to take three semesters of physical education. Instead, the state upped the requirements for science and math so that students have take both all four years of high school. As...

Ronald Reagan's "Indoctrination" of American Schoolchildren

As a bright and shining example of the outright lies and blatant hypocrisy coming from the far-right over what they have concocted in their tiny, narrow minds as what is going to be President Obama's "indoctrination" of schoolchildren in his remarks next week, I give you the Michael Savage show from yesterday:"The first president in American history who is going to force children to listen to a speech he's going to give.""No American president in...
Last night I spent an hour watching a documentary that included some footage from the civil rights movement. It offered a short clip of Dr. Martin Luther King saying at what appeared to be a press conference that it was his request that President Kennedy sign an executive order declaring segregation illegal. At the time he made this statement, President Kennedy was under great pressure to advance civil rights without threatening his own chances...

TAKS Dirty Little Secret

It occurred to me that I haven't done an education piece in awhile. As the school year gets going, people are going to be more and more concerned with TAKS scores. TAKS scores seem to be the life blood of our industry. My campus was one student away from being exemplary (the top rating). We had to "settle" for being recognized. Being recognized on the heels of Ike is a huge accomplishment for our campus....

Unilateral Decision Making

I have children attending HISD, specifically the performing arts schools in the district. The facilities themselves are some of the oldest there are in the district, and some of the worst maintained.  It is obvious that we as a society don't appreciate the arts (and smARTS) the way we used to because we let these gifted kids go to school in substandard facilities. I'm guessing a major problem lies in the fact that FOOTBALL programs...

An Open Letter to Parents

As the so-called education blogger I thought I would add this in on the eve before school starts for most of our students. Some of our students have been back a week, but this message is important for all of our parents. Call this a preliminary statement before things get heated or tense. For those of you that don't know, I am a school counselor by trade. There are quite a few licensed professional counselors that...
