It's All About the Turnout

There has been a plethora of polling data related to the upcoming mid-term elections released in the last few days--some confusing, some not so much. The confusing; this series of questions from a Washington Post/ABC News poll: Which party do you trust to do a better job on the problems facing the country? Democrats. Which party better represents your values? Democrats. Which party is more concerned with people like you? Democrats.

If the election were held today, who would you vote for? Republicans. What the......?

Mother Jones Poll.jpgThen there was this from a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll:

Do you think if Republicans win control of Congress in November they will return to the economic policies of George W. Bush or do you think they will have different ideas for how to deal with the economy?

Policies of George W. Bush 35%

Different ideas 58%

Disconnect from reality, anyone? What have I missed? What I've heard from Republicans so far is tax cuts for the rich, and......well, more tax cuts for the rich. That's a different idea? Some of the other polls weren't a real shocker. Republican enthusiasm is high--no kidding. Republicans have been ready to vote since the day after the 2008 election.

This one was more than a little alarming. Three government and political science professors who predicted the outcome of the 2006 House mid-terms within 2 seats of the actual results, ran 1,000 different scenarios and Republicans gain control of the House in 79% of them. Add that to this from Larry Sabato and it doesn't paint a pretty picture:

"Since World War II, the House of Representatives has flipped parties on six occasions (1946, 1948, 1952, 1954, 1994, and 2006). Every time, the Senate flipped too, even when it had not been predicted to do so."

So, what's it all about? Nothing new. The same thing every other mid-term is about--turnout. Republicans are going to turn out, no question about that. Democrats are going to lose seats in both Houses, the only question is how many. If the thought of Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader McConnell, and the Senate being comprised of Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, Rand Paul, and this latest Tea Party nutbar in Delaware, Christine O'Donnell, doesn't get Democrats to the polls, I don't know what will.

One more incentive. A Republican wave could result in GOP control of at least a dozen more state legislatures--in a redistricting year.

thanks, Desp - the Thursday piece about polls being biased towards GOP by Mark Blumenthal shows why we should not believe the polls in Texas:

everyone should vote early and then volunteer to take Dems to the polls on Nov. 2 :)

Since we have a Democrat for President, how can he do his job with a Republican Congress?
I think they have to be on the same page for him to do anything.

I would say the same thing if the President had been a Republican.

Well aren't you a ray of sunshine?

I'd like to think the people in this country are smart enough NOT to allow the GOP back in power. But I'm not sure I have that much faith in my fellow man.

We are gonna need a BIG turnout in the black, Asian, and Hispanic communities.

The GOP back in poweer..Boehner, speaker? That would be a disaster of epic proportions.

We should have learned during the Dubyah years: if you espouse the BS often enough, and loudly enough, it will be true. Think WMDs in Iraq ...

I think my head is about to explode.

We all need to get out and VOTE. And encourage all other Dems to vote also.

I don't know about you, but the thought of pumpkinhead Boehner being Speaker....that's just creepy. HE'S creepy. He's got a 1970's robot-vibe going on with that shake 'n' bake tan and plastered hairstyle.

Underneath all that orange, I don't think there is a heart or working brain cells. Alien invasion perhaps?
