Any of this sound familiar?
The result?
The year was 1938. The president was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Now here we are again:
So what is the Obama administration proposing as a solution for a stagnant economy and insufficient job creation?? Tax cuts, tax cuts, and more tax cuts:
Good, sound political strategery--let the opposition define the terms of engagement and play into their theme that tax cuts are the prescription for whatever ails the economy. And speaking of political strategery, how the hell is anybody still unclear on this subject?
Aaaaarrrggghhhh!!
Krugman concludes:
That'll be the day.
P.S. Since it's Labor Day, I can't let this pass without comment:
On behalf of organized labor, right backatcha Rahm. And the horse you rode in on.
"The U.S. economy has been crippled by a financial crisis. The president's policies have limited the damage, but they were too cautious, and unemployment remains disastrously high. More action is clearly needed. Yet the public has soured on government activism, and seems poised to deal Democrats a severe defeat in the midterm elections.
[...]
Gallup polling... [a]sked whether government spending should be increased to fight the slump, 63 percent of those polled said no. Asked whether it would be better to increase spending or to cut business taxes, only 15 percent favored spending; 63 percent favored tax cuts."
The result?
"And the...election was a disaster for the Democrats, who lost 70 seats in the House and seven in the Senate."
The year was 1938. The president was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Now here we are again:
"More stimulus is desperately needed, but in the public's eyes the failure of the initial program to deliver a convincing recovery has discredited government action to create jobs."
So what is the Obama administration proposing as a solution for a stagnant economy and insufficient job creation?? Tax cuts, tax cuts, and more tax cuts:
"With just two months until the November elections, the White House is seriously weighing a package of business tax breaks - potentially worth hundreds of billions of dollars - to spur hiring and combat Republican charges that Democratic tax policies hurt small businesses, according to people with knowledge of the deliberations."
Good, sound political strategery--let the opposition define the terms of engagement and play into their theme that tax cuts are the prescription for whatever ails the economy. And speaking of political strategery, how the hell is anybody still unclear on this subject?
"If administration officials can agree on a policy path, it is not clear that it would be approved in the current environment on Capitol Hill."

Krugman concludes:
"But always remember: this slump can be cured. All it will take is a little bit of intellectual clarity, and a lot of political will. Here's hoping we find those virtues in the not too distant future."

P.S. Since it's Labor Day, I can't let this pass without comment:
"In "Overhaul", his upcoming chronicle of his reign as "car czar," Steven Rattner offers an insider's account of the Obama administration's rescue of the auto industry...Rattner depicts White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel as a force to be reckoned with who disparaged unions -- once quipping "F**k the UAW..."

I just LOVE all the people (mostly republicans) who CONTINUE to say making the rich even richer is the only way to cure the recession. I wonder what it must be like to BE one of those people who absolutely, never, has to make a CHOICE between tuna surprise and mac 'n cheese for dinner, THIS WEEK. That never has to make a choice between getting your 10 year old car fixed so you can go to work, or buying your kid the medicine he needs.
If you gotta petition, I want to sign it. I think Emanuel AND Axelrod are BOTH part of the problem. Sorry. On Sunday, on Meet the This Week (SOrry I don't remember which show it was) someone had this Plouffe guy who worked on the Obama campaign. This guy impressed me. He needs to replace Emanuel, maybe Axelrod too.
Hi Shortstuff,
I can tell you first hand that dog food taste Horrible. I was dishing out dog food for my little pup and after dishing it out I accidentally put the spoon in my mouth..See what happens when you become an old lady...
Oh goodness it was just a terrible taste, worse than my cooking..lol..
Like I have said over and over... It doesn't matter which hand they rule with, the right or the left, the little guys (that's us) will always lose.
These modern day robber barons have screwed us.
I can't understand why, with the powerful lesson of the Great Depression and its aftermath, our political leaders continue to head down the wrong path.
I agree.
Rahm needs to be shown the door. And escorted out of said door on a rail. He is NOT doing the president any favors. If I didn't know better, I'd say he was a teabagger plant.
Happy Labor Day, everyone. My own personal future, thanks to the economic collapse, seems rather bleak at the moment.
I wonder how dog food *really* tastes?
