As W. C. Fields once said, "It was a woman who drove me to drink and I never even had the courtesy to thank her for it." And according to this latest study showing that abstainers have higher mortality rates than either heavy or moderate drinkers, I owe additional thanks for a few extra years of life.
I'll drink to that. Take it away, George.
"...the researchers (a six-member team led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin) found that over a 20-year period, mortality rates were highest for those who had never been drinkers, second-highest for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers...Just over 69% of the never-drinkers died during the 20 years, 60% of the heavy drinkers died and only 41% of moderate drinkers died.
These are remarkable statistics. Even though heavy drinking is associated with higher risk for cirrhosis and several types of cancer (particularly cancers in the mouth and esophagus), heavy drinkers are less likely to die than people who never drank. One important reason is that alcohol lubricates so many social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health."
I'll drink to that. Take it away, George.

I can't believe no one's brought this up already.
Sucks for you teabaggers!
Cheers! Mazel Tov! Prost! Dos Vedanya! (sp) Salut! Slainte!
How about this for a fight song:
Thunderbird Thunderbird
The grape of the fruity vine (That's Wine)
Thunderbird Thunderbird
It goes down smooth and fine (So Fine)
Taste the best cost the less
What's the price fifty twice
That's the truth now you've heard
What's the word Thunderbird
Thunderbird Thunderbird
The grape of the fruity vine (That's Wine)

It goes down smooth and fine (So Fine)
Make's you loose as a Goose
Get's you drunk as a skunk
That's the truth now you've heard
What's the word Thunderbird

It'll make you scream and shout
That's the truth now you've heard
What's the word Thunderbird

Muchas gracias, Tater. I appreciate that.
Why is this on a blog? It should be a "public service announcement."
Kudos for the outstanding job you continue to do every day.
The "Tater" salutes you.
that settles it....I'm immortal.
I'm feelin' you, baby... :O)
Only regret is that I didn't do it many years earlier.
I blame the Puritans. We have the second highest rate of alcoholism in the industrialized world (Russia number one). Note, I didn't say second most alcohol consumed. Volume and attitude are two entirely different things.
As for me and my family, we drink the good stuff. We go to Spec's and buy the imported stuff. It does help in dealing with the stress of dealing with certain people.
shortstuff,
congratulations on having dumped that stiff... :O)
I'll drink to that! (in a month!)
"I yam inwincivil!"
The first round's on me.
"teetotaler". I can spell and I haven't even had a 'rita tonight!
Teetotalers have higher mortality rates?
Damn, that's the best thing I've heard in years, since I dumped the teetolaler who frowned on every drink I had for a quarter of a century.
I need a margarita!
