Revising the Bush Administration Timeline

To listen to the Bush administration history revisionists and legacy reconstructionists one would think that his 2 terms in office started on September 12, 2001. For years they have reminded us how President Bush "kept us safe" for over 7 years following 9/11, which is kind of like saying that other than the iceberg incident the captain of the Titanic had an impeccable safety record.

Now that Republicans are running on a platform of taking us back to the good old days of the Bush economic policies, they have to cover over that gaping hole in the side of the HMS Bushonomics, so a little revision and timeline shifting is necessary there as well. Paul Krugman explains:

"On the economy: Last week Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, declared that "there's no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy." So now the word is that the Bush-era economy was characterized by "vibrancy."

I guess it depends on the meaning of the word "vibrant." The actual record of the Bush years was (i) two and half years of declining employment, followed by (ii) four and a half years of modest job growth, at a pace significantly below the eight-year average under Bill Clinton, followed by (iii) a year of economic catastrophe. In 2007, at the height of the "Bush boom," such as it was, median household income, adjusted for inflation, was still lower than it had been in 2000.

[...]

On the deficit: Republicans are now claiming that the Bush administration was actually a paragon of fiscal responsibility, and that the deficit is Mr. Obama's fault. "The last year of the Bush administration," said Mr. McConnell recently, "the deficit as a percentage of gross domestic product was 3.2 percent, well within the range of what most economists think is manageable. A year and a half later, it's almost 10 percent."

But that 3.2 percent figure, it turns out, is for fiscal 2008 -- which wasn't the last year of the Bush administration, because it ended in September of 2008. In other words, it ended just as the failure of Lehman Brothers [Lehman filed for bankruptcy on September 15] -- on Mr. Bush's watch -- was triggering a broad financial and economic collapse. This collapse caused the deficit to soar: By the first quarter of 2009 -- with only a trickle of stimulus funds flowing -- federal borrowing had already reached almost 9 percent of G.D.P. To some of us, this says that the economic crisis that began under Mr. Bush is responsible for the great bulk of our current deficit. But the Republican Party is having none of it."

George Walker Bush, 43rd President of the Unites States. January 20, 2001--January 20, 2009. September 12, 2001--September 14, 2008. There, fixed it.

the current enviroment has turned family members against each other. republican vs democrats, north vs south, truth vs lie, the media is a plus when the news is being reported, but some of the news shows are not news reporting shows, but propaganda aimed at their mass audience withouut any regard to the truth.

desp - since you quote Krugman, here's a post from his blog today that links to Martin Wolf:

you might even want to blurb on it yourself.

If you get that gig, I'm going to sponsor you. I'll be "Kel's Survival Seeds & Gold"

It is a little scary. But on the other hand I might be able to get an hour on Fox where I can part the fools from their money like Beck does. Just have to work on the spontaneous crying.

That's got me ROFL....but the fact that you have deciphered how Beck's (non)brain works has me kinda scared. ;-)

And after reading Paul Krugman on the GOP's latest revisionist tactics concerning the Bush presidency/policies, the question that keeps coming to my mind is: what the hell is WRONG with these people???

omg - that's freaking hilarious !

Logic challenged, the lot of them are.

OK, I’ve watched enough Beck to know how this works, so let me give it a try.

Herbert Hoover was born in Eighteen Seventy-FOUR.
He was the 31st president. 3+1=FOUR.
There are FOUR letters in Karl and FOUR letters in Marx.
FOUR plus FOUR equals EIGHT.
Hoover was born in August, the EIGHTH month.

Ergo, Hoover was a communist.

That sounds like it came straight off of Beck's chalkboard.

You have to be kidding?

Herbert Hoover - liberal?

Damn, there is another person who must have been asleep - or absent - in American History in high school.

I had a rightie tell me that the Great Depression was because of that 'liberal' Herbert Hoover and his 'liberal hand outs' and FDR just made it last longer.

Your friend said that his reality was real?

Poor dears. Do they realize there are meds for their paranoia?

It cracks me up (when it doesn't make me angry) that they are so damned determined to paint the world their way with their illogic, that they can't see the truth: that this collapse is the result of Reaganomics. Plain and simple. Maybe if it had happened overnight, it might be clearer to them, instead of being a 30-year downfall. It took 30 years but the THUD of the bottom dropping out hurts just as badly.

George W. Bush. WORST. PRESIDENT. EVER!!!!

Bill Clinton must have been responsible for that.

LOL and remember he also spent the next eight years hiding from the public in his secret hobbit hole!

I talked to my 'rightie' buddy yesterday after several months of non-communication due to encroaching socialism creating a rift between us.

He explained to me how Obamanomics is causing all our financial problems. I just looked him straight in the eye and said, "I know you really really want to believe that, but you know it's not true!" He red-faced just shook his head and said that his reality was real. I think that even the right is catching glimpses of the matrix in which they live.

very clever desp; that way it can also be omitted that on May 8, 2001 Cheney was appointed to head an administration task force on terrorism - which, umm, never met in the 4 months before 9/11:

as safety was reportedly 'job one' with these guys, everything is now fully revealed.
