Politics and the Mainstream Media: A Physics Primer

Newton's First Law states: An object's inertia causes it to continue moving the way it is moving unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force to change its motion.

In the simplest of terms, this means an object (like a passive-aggressive GOP body politik) will always continue moving at its current speed (slowly or not at all as the party of "no"), and in its current direction (down into the muck) until some force (perhaps we the people, who are finally fed up with the BS) causes its speed or direction to change.

Gyroscopic Inertia is defined as: A body that is set spinning has a tendency to keep spinning in its original orientation.

In the simplest of terms, this means the mainstream media (MSM) will continue to allow its "commentators" (i.e., people who are most definitely NOT journalists) to continue to postulate and spin everything completely out of control (without regard to journalistic integrity or any sense of fairness or balance), all for the sake of ratings and big money tied to advertising revenue that such controversy, misinformation, and BS brings in. Yay, ratings!

Newton's Third Law of Motion states: When object A exerts a force on object B, object B will exert an equal and opposite force back on object A.

In the simplest terms, this means that when we the people (object B) finally get fed up with being fed the pablum of ignorance, narrowness and divisiveness by those who attach ridiculous monikers to their groups in the name of "patriotism" for the good of the country/super rich (object A), we will finally tell them to sit down, "shut the front door" and let us all get back to trying to set this country on a better course ... and not the exclusive country club golf course overrun with Gordon Gecko-types that have increased exponentially since we were tinkled on by the "trickle down" theory.

Next time, perhaps we'll have a biology primer relating to ingestion/excretion of said pablum.

Ever heard the 1% rule? 1% of the people make things happen. 9% watch them make things happen. The other 90% sit around and say, "What happened." That's the way it is, that's the way it always has been. If we want to change the current direction, some of the 90% need to start watching, and some of the 9% (like our bloggers) need to get involved.

I wish more citizens had exposure to the basics of good journalism.

Then, I optimistically conclude, we wouldn't have the crapeola that passes for "truth" on the airwaves.

Why thanks, Engineer! Not bad for a blonde Aggie with a liberal arts degree, I guess.

I agree with you on the a$$ kicking part. What so many of us fail to realize is that public perception is the reality that we all have to live with, like it or not, correct or not.

I'm tired of their reality and so is my bank account, to say the least. We need to live on Planet Non-Obstructionist for a while and get some things taken care of.

Even with a PhD in physics, I still appreciate clever application of the basic laws. Excellent post.

Just saw on CNN that voter sentiment is continuing to move against the Dems, supposedly because they are being abandoned by the independents.

I'm one of those so-called "independents". The Dems need to get the public perception in line with the reality as to who is blocking progress. I'm afraid that means abandon bipartisanship, at least for a while, and move to a kick @$$ strategy. I hope they will do it with humor rather than dishonesty, even the GOP goes all out on swiftboat-style campaigning.

Journalistic integrity does seem to be meaningless now. I remember taking a journalism class in high school. If I remember right, our instructor taught us that the formula for good reporting was the 5 W's and one H. What, Who, When, Where, Why, and How. I guess they have since added the S for Speculation and the O for Opinion to that formula.

Well, I'm ready to kick the obstructionist GOP in the @$$. Anyone willing to join? Maybe we can move them in a different direction with a nice little "spin" to them.

GOP butt: meet my foot!
