BP Involved in Release of Lockerbie Bomber? Maybe.

You remember that the Lockerbie bomber, Abdelbeset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who was serviing a life sentence for killing 270 people on Pan Am Flight 103, was released from a Scottish prison for humanitarian reasons, in August of last year.  We were told that he was terminally ill and only had 3 months to live, and that it would be better for all if he returned to his home country.  You also recall that he received a hero's welcome when he landed back in his home country to the outrage of the rest of the world.  Well, curiously, he's still alive, a year later.  But that's not all.  A story is now surfacing that BP may have actively lobbied for al Megrahi's release in a deal for Libyan offshore acreage.

Senators Charles Schumer, Bob Menendez and Frank Lautenberg are demanding an investigation into BP's involvement in release negotiations and to it's relationship with the government of Libya.  The doctor who had given him the 3 month prognosis, Dr. Karol Sikora, a  doctor hired by Libya. Last week, has said that the three month prognosis was suggested as "being helpful" to the Libyans, and that al Megrahi may live for another 20 years.  The allegations gained credence when BP announced, just last month, that they have begun drilling off of the Libyan coast.  However, the oil and gas development contract was signed with the Libyan government in 2007, the first for them in 30 years.

We'll follow this story.

Hi, Bob,

Been admiring your work on the Gulf disaster. Thanks.

Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the considerable evidence that al Megrahi was framed and that the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 was likely in retaliation for the shooting down five months earlier of Iran Air flight 655 by the US battleship Vincennes. All 290 passengers on the Iranian commercial flight died. The crew of the Vincennes were given medals and the U.S. never apologized. Not a real crowd pleaser in the Middle East.

the possibility is disgusting; where's my CNG car so we will no longer care whether Libya exports oil or kiwi fruit ?
