Back on October 15, we ran a piece about Keith Bardwell, a justice of the peace in Louisiana who refused to marry an interracial couple.
He resigned today, according to the Associated Press:
A justice of the peace in Baton Rouge who refused to marry a couple because the bride was white and groom was black resigned. The justice of the peace, Keith Bardwell, who is white, quit the post with a one-sentence statement to the Louisiana secretary of state, Jay Dardenne, and no explanation of his decision. Mr. Bardwell refused to perform the ceremony for Beth Humphrey and Terence McKay on Oct. 6 because they are of different races. When questioned about his refusal, Mr. Bardwell acknowledged that he routinely recused himself from marrying interracial couples because he believed such marriages caused harm to the couples' children. Mr. Bardwell's resignation followed calls for his ouster from several public officials, including Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican, and Senator Mary L. Landrieu, a Democrat. Ms. Humphrey and Mr. McKay, who were married by another justice of the peace, have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Mr. Bardwell.
To change the subject, why are they referring to Mary Landrieu as a Democrat? She's blocking health reform, is she not?

But, but, why would he travel ? He might see inter-racial couples holding hands and he knows, fer shur, that he would go blind at the sight. Its the way of his world.
She lives in LOUISIANA. What do you expect? That state is riddled with corruption on both sides.

It's not a matter of ideological purity, but rather a question of principles. Health care reform has been a Democratic Party priority for years. If she or Liebermann want to obstruct the party reaching it's major goal - one most of us want and the reason we elected a Democratic majority, I think it's safe to say neither can be considered Democrats.
Landrieu - facing a conservative electorate - knows she would be in trouble, so she abandoned the party to which she says she belongs. I think we should offer to help her out. It's more than just winning the next election. It's about doing what we said we would do.
I wonder where he got his statistics on the "harm" to children. What an idiot! There are very few family lines that are pure white, AA, Latino. He is living in a dark room with blinders.
My grandson is 1/2 Philippino, and I have heard no one say anything derogatory about him. He's called cute, smart, well-mannered.
This man probably grew up in a small town and never ventured anywhere. Well now he has time to travel and see the real America.
I know you're right, but I don't want to acknowledge it, dear.
Special circumstance IMO machine. HC reform is coming down to a test for sure with the question being are we, as a party and as a people going to continue letting corporations put profit first when it comes to life and death for us. I don't think a Democrat can answer yes to that question.
I am just glad the he resigned. Period. We have enough of these old white geezers to last us a lifetime.
