Following up on Friday's post about the Republican's screaming hissy fit over reaction to Attorney General Eric Holder's decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others in New York City, Sarah the Quitter, correspondent from Facebook, has chimed in with her opinion:
Since so many of the Palinites areteabaggers Tea Party attendees, and since Thomas Jefferson in particular, and the Founding Fathers in general, seem to be often quoted by said teabaggers American patriots, let's take a look at what Jefferson and John Adams had to say about the principle of trial by jury.
"Representative government and trial by jury are the heart and lungs of liberty. Without them we have no other fortification against being ridden like horses, fleeced like sheep, worked like cattle and fed and clothed like swine and hounds." -John Adams, 1774.
"By a declaration of rights, I mean one which shall stipulate freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of commerce against monopolies, trial by juries in all cases, no suspensions of the habeas corpus, no standing armies. These are fetters against doing evil which no honest government should decline." --Thomas Jefferson to Alexander Donald, 1788.
"I consider [trial by jury] as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Paine, 1789.
Call me crazy, but I'll side with Jefferson and Adams over Palin and Boehner eight days a week.
"Horrible decision, absolutely horrible. It is devastating for so many of us to hear that the Obama Administration decided that the 9/11 terrorist mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be given a criminal trial in New York. This is an atrocious decision.
...It is crucially important that Americans be made aware that the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks may walk away from this trial without receiving just punishment because of a "hung jury" or from any variety of court room technicalities. If we are stuck with this terrible Obama Administration decision, I, like most Americans, hope that Mohammed and his co-conspirators are convicted. Hang 'em high."
Since so many of the Palinites are

I'm gonna buy me a gun.
Truth is, for perspective I hearken back to the mid 60's when the civil riots were taking place.
I never personally felt threatened but some of my small hometown 'farm folk' buddies were scared! I remember spending the night at a friends house (we were in elementary school) and he and his younger brother had loaded shotguns propped against the living room wall in anticipation of the scheduled riots in Chicago and various southern cities. I mean it was ludicrous to think we would ever be touched by the ongoing violence, but, by God, we were ready.
I'm hoping that history is repeating itself in somewhat fractured fairy tale form.
Carguy,
I think the actual quote was, "I've been to Venus ON Tom Cruise!" She is obviously a Tom Cruise fan... :O)
carguy i do see your point, something i've not considered. after thinking it over, perhaps the torture at gitmo factors in. i was just thinking, so many who voted obama in were pissed with his talk about "not looking back" and not prosecuting the torture. then fox news, rove & cheney instead of taking obama's gift of letting it go, rubbed it in his face and spent several sunday morning talk show hours CONDONING the torture! so we have the war crimes of the bush regime, gitmo that needs to be closed and obama & eric holder really could use a shot in the arm to stop the right from painting them soft on terrorists. especially after fort hood, which the right so conveniently lays at obama's feet giving bush a pass. i actually heard one of the republican zealots say that "everyone" at ft hood knew the shrink was a muslim extremist, but because they had to be politically correct they could not say anything. sounds more like dereliction of duty to me, knowing a threat to the country was in plain sight but saying nothing because you did not want to be called a hater. especially when general powell said during the election that what kept the military strong and "above the political fray" was the fact that they all served the commander in chief, NO MATTER who that was, as prescribed by their oaths. powell went on to say military blood flows red, white AND blue and never one or the other color. so somebody's lying here, or we're supposed to believe republicans that the military decided after election day that obama was not THEIR president like petty lawmakers and republican governors did. i'm going with the former, because the latter is insulting to the honor of our men & women in uniform. and no matter how unamerican culberson and the others in congress can get, how much they can milk a terrorism trial for partisan capital and fundraising dollars, i do not believe KSM will be set free to go and attack new yorkers. i have faith in the american justice system.
We've had vapid before. Reagan and the second Bush come to mind. The problem with both was not them per se, but those they were surrounded with. When people who are not elected exert so much control it becomes a very dangerous situation.
Maybe the single best post about Palin I've ever seen: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/11/the-institute-for-the-study-of-sarah-palin.html
From Richard Cohen in today's Washington Post:
"She has a phenomenal favorability rating among Republicans -- 76 percent -- who have a quite irrational belief that she would not make such a bad president. What they mean is that she will act out their resentments -- take an ax to the people and institutions they hate. The Palin Movement is fueled by high-octane bile, and it is worth watching and studying for these reasons alone."
Her book has a certain truthiness to it
Surely she doesn't have a radar unit in her home?
I just read a scathing article claiming that Ms Palin has some unfactual facts in her book. I guess that goes to the NON-EXISTANT "fact checking" of her political party. That can damage one's credibility with the 12.187% of the public that still thinks she has some.
Did I hear the Japanes First Lady has been to Venus with Tom Cruise???? Does Katy know about this?
Wilma,
holy sh*t...are you kidding. That's even scarier than the usual routine.
But, I can't say that I'm really and truly surprised.
There is something really really wrong with those people. I mean really really wrong!
Scott...yep, you are definitely on a roll...:O)
Ex-Governor Palin said today on TV that running for president in 2012 was not on her radar screen. (I presume that is the same radar screen she used when she told us Putin flies his missiles from Russia - which she can see from her house - to get to the U.S.) But I digress.
70% of Americans believe she is unqualified to be president. So good call, Sarah. But it would have been enormously fun to watch.

Palin Looking Forward to Reading Her Book
‘Looks Like A Page-turner,' Says Former Guv
NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - Amid the publicity blitz for her new book, Going Rogue, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said today that "she was looking forward to reading it, big time."
The book has already been a publishing sensation, rocketing to number one on the New York Times bestseller list for Fiction.
Gov. Palin said that the book caught her interest as she was promoting it on Oprah last week.
"From everything I've said about it, it sure seems to be a page-turner," she said. "As soon as I'm off this book tour I can't wait to sink my teeth into it."
Former Miss California Carrie Prejean echoed Gov. Palin's sentiments: "I am also looking forward to reading MY book."
Spot on - great analogy to Luann!
So many things rushing through right now, but the one that sticks is "the devil is in the details." the thinking conservative is an endangered species. The party runs om emotion. It's like the GOP is a collective Luann from king of the hill that chooses a candidate based on the color of their tie. Why not? It makes about as much sense as anything else. Sarah Palin doesn't believe in details. She combines the perfect storm of beauty, charisma, and the gift of oversimplification.
I think this is an exception because the lives they took were civilians on American soil. BIG difference from lives taken in combat in a war zone.
Carguy,
good thought...an idea worth debate.
I am OK with the AG's decision on these terrorists. But, since they THOUGHT they were fighting a war with us, I think that makes them enemy combatants and a military tribunal would be the appropriate venue. Just my opinion. I could be wrong.
I am pretty sure that Sarah Palin DOES represent and REFLECT the ideals of her supporters and followers. adn MOST of them, if not all, are members of the GOP.
OTOH, the rest of the GOP, that's 41% if my math is correct, apparently still have SOME detectable brain activity.

Hell, even GEORGE Jefferson and DON Adams have more credibility with me.
OK, 59% of Republican voters say Palin represents them....that means 59% of the 21% of Americans who still consider themselves to be Republican, right?
That makes it a VERY SMALL number, doesn't it?
Recently I started a book by Friedrich Hayek called "The Road to Serfdom" You might have heard of it. From what I gather it is viewed as the Magna Carta of conservative freedoms.
Here's the most interesting thing I've read so far: Hayek maintains (in 1936, I think) that the only principle of liberalism (i.e. classical liberalism which somehow is meant as conservatism and specifically economic laissez-faire) still standing is one of "tolerance" Tolerance being the bedrock of conservative philosophy in that it accommodates acknowledgement of personal sovereignty.
T-O-L-E-R-A-N-C-E...
The right has cast aside the sole remaining claim to legitimacy. Therefore, I declare conservatism dead!
"A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 59% of Republican voters say Palin "shares the values of most GOP voters throughout the nation."
Yep. Values like bigotry, stupidity, resentment, pretend victimhood.
2012 here she comes.
Its amusing to me that most of the speeches (rants) she subjects her audiences to have a standing requirement: No reporters or TV press are invited, wanted or allowed. Guarantees a partisan audience of Sarah lovers and allows her to spew whatever nonsense that comes to her mind. Maybe M. Bachmann should adapt the same policy then she wouldn't look quite so stupid. Maybe ?
the youngest and i were watching cspan this morning over tea, ruining perfectly good karma of rasberry zinger while a glazed over "author" raved on about his book "the persecution of sarah palin". the young man, an editor for the weekly sandard (lol) and a recent graduate of columbia university, was obsessed with palin like a deranged fan club president. he outlined several liberal media "lies" about palin, like her being accused of belonging to the secession group in alaska (husband was a card-carrying member), and then on to the "gotcha" katie couric interview moaning about palin not getting the questions beforehand. before moving on to "charmed" for a more educational program, i could not help but wonder what in the hell is happening to cspan? they need downsize to 2 phone lines because the usual dem, repub & independent calls have turned into there, out there, and really out there! palin's hoax is taking longer to unmask than balloon boy & his family, but watching clips of her family's public appearances this morning was strikingly similar.
I wouldn't count anything she has to say on policy matters.
It took quitter Governor Palin five years to get a bachelors degree in communications, after having attended four different schools. Like George W. Bush, she failed at every career option she attempted after graduation. If she looked like Susan Boyle, she'd still be sitting on the City Council in Wasilla, Alaska, complaining about books in the library and lecturing others about the validity of creationism.
But failure, to the GOP, apparently means success. Aside from all of the other banalities and inanities she had uttered in the last year, let us accept that she has a pretty poor grasp of exactly how our legal system works. None, to be exact.
Sarah Palin is living, breathing proof that expertise, education and knowledge do matter.
