Poll Shows 52% of Republicans Believe ACORN Stole the Election

To those of us who have been around the blogs for about the last 18 months this data from Public Policy Polling should come as no surprise:

"PPP's newest national survey finds that a 52% majority of GOP voters nationally think that ACORN stole the Presidential election for Barack Obama last year, with only 27% granting that he won it legitimately...Overall 62% of Americans think Obama legitimately won the election to only 26% who think ACORN stole it for him, as few Democrats or independents buy into that line of thinking."

Also not surprising is that the latest poster child for the far-right nutjobs, Doug Hoffman, is jumping aboard the "ACORN did it" bandwagon:

"Losing NY-23 candidate Doug Hoffman became the latest in an increasingly long line of conservative politicians to blame his problems on ACORN yesterday despite the complete lack of evidence the organization played any role in his defeat."

Evidence? They don't need no stinkin' evidence. Hannity said it, they believe it, that settles it.

Of course the majority of what's left of the GOP believe this nonsense. When your world and your daily source of information consists of Beck, Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, and the Fox Propaganda Channel, what else would you believe? Spencer Ackerman offers 2 explanations for the polling results:

"1. Racism. They can't believe that Enn Word won the election. No Enn Word has ever been president of the United States. Ergo, this Enn Word certainly could not have been legitimately elected. This requires ascribing Herculean powers to ACORN, but whatever. That organization is full of Enn Words.

2. Absolute Blithering Hysteria. See the ACORN point."

I would combine the two into one; Absolute blithering hysteria caused by racism. Here's my theory, FWIW:

After it became clear last year that Barack Obama was going to win the Democratic nomination for president (or did ACORN steal that too, hmmm) it never even entered the tiny minds of the bigots on the right that he would be elected president. And let's face it, that's what drives the vast majority of the Obama haters, bigotry. Anyone who receives the chain e-mails and has either attended or seen pictures of the signs at the Tea Parties knows that's true.

How many times during last year's campaign when polls showed Obama with a lead did we hear about the Bradley Effect? Too many to count. The bigots were certain that even though white people were telling pollsters they were going to vote for Obama, they were lying, and once they entered the voting booth they would come to their senses and pull the lever for the white guy. Why did they think that? Because that's exactly what they would do. All but the most blatant of racists don't admit it. We've all heard the BS, "I'm not racist, some of my best friends are black."

Since never, even in their worst nightmares, did the notion that Barack Obama could ever be elected president exist, when it actually happened they became completely unhinged. Even to this day, no matter how many ways it's been disproved, the haters continue the ridiculous argument that was born in Kenya or Indonesia. He's not a legitimate American, a "real" American, so therefore he's not really the president. Then they listen to the talk-radio hatemongers and Fox Propaganda "news" people who feed their delusion and hysteria hour after hour, day after day, month after month.

The bigots know from what they hear on those outlets that ACORN is an organization that registers "them" to vote, and which employs a lot of "them," so it's completely believable that ACORN stole the election for Obama.

Just my $0.02.

And the teabaggers wonder why we mock them......

...but anyone who thinks that ACORN has affected ANY elections is delusional.

If so, it's not for lack of effort.

Editor's note: A fact-free assertion from Gary. We always took you for just a jerk, not a teabagger. I guess some things can change.

I think they have hired corrupt individuals but as an organization have been well above board. At each turn they have fully cooperated with authorities when those corrupt individuals have been found out.

Nope.
However, I would be willing to bet that most here WOULD agree that the GOP is now a corrupt organization.
Along with its propaganda arm, Fox News.

"i'd like to see full hearings on the "bill of attainer" angle, because it's going to be hard for repulicans to serve it to acorn and prevent democrats from serving it to kbr. of course that would require dems to actually grow a pair and push the issue."

One would first have to educate the GOP on what a Bill of Attainder is, since most Republicans are apparently unfamiliar with the constitution. And even after they have been educated, it still doesn't mean they wouldn't try to do it. Rules don't generally apply to Republicans. But you are definitely right about the Dems being reluctant to apply it to KBR. Weenies.

Surely everyone here would agree that ACORN is a corrupt organization.

Editor's note: Probably not. Most would agree that it is not well run, in general, but anyone who thinks that ACORN has affected ANY elections is delusional.

this is a downside of technological development. many who utilize technology like internet social networking, texting and twitter feed off "fwd fwd fwd" email information. reminds me of the "gossip" pages of days gone by. if acorn engineered the election in obama's favor, they earned it by stealth and jedi capabilities. if the best they have on acorn turns out to be the yuppie pimp & fake hooker and the videos "revealed" in stragetically arranged fox exclusives, we need some hearings. some FCC hearings to re-evaluate guidelines about journalism and cable licensing as the industry relates to credentials. i'd like to see full hearings on the "bill of attainer" angle, because it's going to be hard for repulicans to serve it to acorn and prevent democrats from serving it to kbr. of course that would require dems to actually grow a pair and push the issue.

That does it! I'm going to start the Squirrel party, and we're going to steal ACORN away from the Republicans for good!

You know me. I am the "Director of comedy". But this really disturbs me. Yeah, I know, like Shortstuff, that its REALLY ONLY .1092 of the OVERALL population. And, frankly, subscribing to the Mark Twain adage.."95% of the people in the world are idiots, and the other 5% of us are in danger of contagion"..I shouldn't be surprised. This poll is well within Mark Twain's "margin of error".

arte speaks for me too. He usually does. If, as they say, "ignorance is bliss", these people must be so damn happy all the time they fixin' to pop.

"PPP's newest national survey finds that a 52% majority of GOP voters nationally think that ACORN stole the Presidential election for Barack Obama last year, with only 27% granting that he won it legitimately...
------------------------------------------------

And of the 52% that think ACORN stole the election 99% think Mr. Obama was born in Kenya, 88% think Mr. Obama wants to kill grandma, 85% think he is going to get my guns, 84% say he is going to confiscate my 401K, 90% say he is trying to indoctrinate my kids and the remaining 1/3 of 1% are actually sane.

Reading about this in The Hill this morning gave me a giggle. The giggling stopped, though, when contemplating that these folks are presumably also contributors to the gene pool.

I'm sure our very own Sparkle, Melissa and Black Shards believe it. Evidence, smevidence, we don't need no stinking evidence.

I have said this before - the Republican Party depends on, in fact it exists, because there are lots and lots of uninformed -ok, use the word "stupid" - voters.

And they are arrogant about their ignorance, disdainful of intellect and fact and reason. Today's quote by Sarah Palin, criticizing those who differ with her:

"These are probably some lonely people, some shallow people who want to take a shot like that and we need to pray for these people for one"

So, people with knowledge, people who are aware of reality and facts, people who can think are, in her view "shallow" and "lonely", deserving of prayer. Honey, they ain't nearly as lonely as that one brain cell you have been using.

OK, now this would be 52% of the 21% of Americans who identify as Republican. Well, as we've always said, they are entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts.
And yes, bigotry runs rampant in that group although they deny it. Witness Texas Sparkle talking about her African-American neighbors and how they are some of the "nice ones" and she "lets her kids play with their kids". But of course *she's* not racist! (Note to Sparkle: Yes. You are.) These folks in the GOP seem to have a huge disability in that they continulally judge others by themselves. They know they would always vote for the white man, so they just assume the rest of us would also.
Which is why they continue to make ASSES of themselves.
I can sit back and laugh at the latest episodes of the GOP Keystone Kops, but what worries me is their level of insanity growing along with their level of stockpiled ammo. Those people are damned stupid and damned dangerous and when you put stupid with guns, someone's gonna get hurt.
