Break Time

It's Friday and that means break time from the political battles for some music. By request, here's Jefferson Airplane (not Starship) for Carol, Somebody to Love:

Wilma wanted to hear something from Stevie Ray Vaughn, and considering our overnight weather, I thought Texas Flood might be appropriate:

In keeping with that theme, here's one of my personal favorites from the Temptations, I Wish It Would Rain:

Happy Friday, everyone. Hasta Manana.

"Stevie Ray is the man. but then so are Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani and Carlos Santanna."

AHunter, I agree, but SRV is the man I shoot pool to... he sings in perfect rhythm with how I shoot. So I practice to him every day.

Thanks, Des. You know, the first time I heard that song, I thought it was a parody... that's before I lived here awhile.

No! Unless I can google that, I am clueless!!!

Don't know that one. Carol?

Grace Slick's band BEFORE the Jefferson Airplane?

How about her maiden name? Slick was her married name.

Well done carol and Des. I hope you enjoyed that.

des could have been our shop "harmony hut". but my dad moved to the village by '71 and had the first comic book store in houson, called "roy's house of memories". he carried the old 45's and vinyls but concentrated on new & vintage comics, and movie stuff like original posters, stills and lobby cards. on saturdays he ran old movies in the back room & his store was crawling with teenagers who stayed all day trading comics! my parents and their friends put on the first "houstoncon" in '72 downtown at a hotel, so i grew up in a circus of trekies and weirdo's lol. we had a store where nan's is @ 59 and shepherd in the 80's, a store in an old house @ binz & labranch (currently childrens museum) at westbury square and in the '90's the last retail store at hilcroft & braeswood by the jewish community center. if you were not into the movie or comic stuff, tell me sometime about what kind of 45's you were (hopefully are) into. sadly my dad recently was diagnosed with dementia and i've had to take over his affairs. his 75th birthday is in november and it seems this warehouse full of stuff i found will allow my son to keep busy. i'm writing a book about my dad's businesses, seems to be a healthy appetite for local houston folklore. billy gibbons of zztop used to make an appointment to buy his comics in the late 70's when he'd come home for a visit, my dad would meet him after hours. ps, i'd forgotten "the night the lights went out in georgia" by vicki carr, my brother used to play it over and over to drive me crazy, thanks for making me laugh.

Here’s the I Wish It Would Rain story, kind of a downer for a Friday, but it might make you listen to the song differently. It did me.

The man who wrote the lyrics had just found out that his wife was cheating on him. The Temptations recorded it, and he committed suicide a week after the record was released.

tragic, I remember Palm Center well. I used to go to a record store there and get old 45's, but that was in the early 70's. I don't recall the name of it.

Very good, Carol.

des you are so correct about taking music breaks, i do this daily! i recently inherited over 5000 vintage vinyls and my son and i are sorting them out right now by genre and condition. since my son is disabled and cannot work outside the home, i'm setting him up to have a music business. it kinda runs in the family as my parents owned a record store called "harmony hut" in palm center back in the early 60's in an area of town called southpark (lol). my dad used to have an hour on the public radio back in the 70's and play rare, obscure music and i used to go with him and just sit and listen. around here we still buy vinyl, most all newer artists still put out albums. my son is enthralled with the old stuff from the 30's up. we even found 78's of hank williams, recordings of presidents from FDR to kennedy! perhaps ambitious but my son set a goal to listen to each record at least once, sad for me because his illness is incurable and he probably won't get to hear them all. so music is therapeutic to me, and despite all my political passion i too find it an enjoyable escape. thanks for breaking up the tension with your music musings and for your blog insights!

Gladys Knight and the Pips

Brook Benton (originally, I think)

Charlie Daniels Band

Vicki Lawrence and Reba (I think)

Man! I should have known that one!

Now, who recorded those songs?

The Night That the Lights Went Out In Georgia

Midnight Train to Georgia?

Rainy Night in Georgia?

The Devil Went Down to Georgia?

May be wrong on the first three, but for the life of me, I can't figure out the blackouts!

Funny...... trains, rain, devils, blackouts.....lotta shit happens in Georgia, in song at least. Anybody want to identify THOSE 4 songs?????

Thought you all might find this interesting.....

I used to be in the travel industry. Many years. When Amtrak "took over" they had a thrice weekly train from LA at 11:59PM. Gladys Knight had a hit song about a "Midnigt Train to Georgia" (from LA, according to the song). But folks....that there train did NOT go any further east than New Orleans. Always bothered me. The inaccuracy of the song.

So, several years ago, with the Internet's expansive data base. I did a litle investigation.
Seems the song was originally titled "Midnight Train to Houston.". BUT, Dean Martin had recently, then, had a HIT song titled "Goin' Back to Houston". Songwriter, publisher and artist all agreed to change the title and lyrics of the song. Accuracy was NOT on their mind. They needed a two syllable destination, catchy......and "Midnight Train to Georgia" was born. Became a hit. Even thought that was NOT possible on Amtrak then or now.

:-)

No googling?? No fun...

Just for a little added trivia, somebody tell me the story behind I Wish It Would Rain. No Googling allowed.

Alien, so many great songs -- so little time.

I think most of us could name so many of our favorites that desperado would have material for the next 10 years of Fridays.

BTW, good picks on your part!

Hey Mr. Desperado,

Why not, "It's a rainy night in Georgia."

not to be a buzz kill or anything.

Stevie Ray is the man. but then so are Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani and Carlos Santanna.

I love it! Thanks for a great end to the week! Manana.

YES! Some SRV.

I'll be shooting pictures at the Komen Race for the Cure tomorrow morning, hope to see y'all there.
