Remember Wiley Drake? To refresh your memory, he is the pastor of a church in Buena Park, California who told Alan Colmes on June 2 that he was praying for the death of President Obama.
Well, Wiley's not alone. Steven Anderson, pastor of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona said, as part of his August 16 sermon entitled "Why I Hate Barack Obama," that he was going to pray for President Obama to "die and go to hell." But that's not all. A member of Anderson's congregation just happens to be this man:

That would be Chris Boughton, the man who was carrying an assault rifle outside the Phoenix convention center where President Obama was giving a speech on August 17, the day following Pastor Anderson's sermon.
TPM Muckraker has the audio of Anderson's entire sermon. It's about an hour long, but I wouldn't advise listening to it unless you have some industrial strength Pepto Bismol nearby. A few excerpts:
* "...a madman is in control of this country."
* "Barack Obama is one of the rulers of darkness of the world."
* "He's not my president."
* Anderson compared President Obama to Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Jeffrey Dahmer, and John Wayne Gacy, as all "violent" men who are responsible for the shedding of innocent blood.
* " He doesn't believe the Bible, he mocks the Bible."
* And wouldn't you know it, Anderson is a "birther." He talked about "little Barry playing baseball on the streets of Kenya where he was born."
Here was his big finish:
"...you're going to tell me that I'm supposed to pray for the socialist devil, murderer, infanticide, who wants to see young children and he wants to see babies killed through abortion and partial-birth abortion and all these different things -- you're gonna tell me I'm supposed to pray for God to give him a good lunch tomorrow while he's in Phoenix, Arizona?
Nope. I'm not gonna pray for his good. I'm going to pray that he dies and goes to hell."
Mr. Anderson, I'm praying too. Praying that hate-filled lunatics like you will stop calling yourself "Christians." I for one am getting more than a little tired of the guilt by association that comes to real Christians every time you or someone who thinks like you opens up their mouths and vomits out this kind of garbage. You aren't within a million miles of the teachings of Christ.

Christianity and insanity go hand-in-hand.
The Southern and Independent Baptists are not outraged because they feel the same way as this nutcase. These are S. Palin's "Real" Americans. How you all like them so far?
This hatred and fucked up crap from the likes of Drake and now this idiot make my blood boil. I do not understand why the Southern and Independent Baptists are not outraged by these horrific and pathetic men. Death wishes on President Obama and they cheer and clap their hands! Christians? Hardly and each of them can slowly rot from the inside out.
Remember Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks who made a statement about being embarrassed of GWB…The fucking Baptists heads were exploding calling her “un-American”, going the airways boycotting their music, driving the radio stations to stop playing their music and the pulpits exploded with outrage. Now this pathetic group has not one moral fiber left in cheering and clapping for a death wish on President Obama.
I read comments by the *Christians* a few months back about Ted Kennedy and stating “water under the bridge” on the chron blogs. These pathetic Southern Baptists are moronic and idiots think they know who is forgiven and who is not. All I can say is God help these pathetic fools.
What I find the most incredible about this man is that there are people who actually hang on his every word, one of whom is a heavily-armed African American. How twisted is THAT?
The fact that Anderson doesn't have a college degree explains SO much. I'm not saying that people without college degrees are less intelligent or less valuable to our society than those WITH one. But they really don't have any business leading a group of easily-influenced people by professing to be an expert on something as complex as the Bible. Classic case of the blind leading the blind...and making an unholy mess of things.
Wouldn't it be nice if some of these knuckleheads came down with a three-week case of laryngitis? It would be a like a vacation.
This guy sounds like a complete joke. Why would anyone pay any worthwhile attention to him and babble? What is the fascination? I really don't get it.
Well............that was certainly an unfortunate incident. Or............was it???????
God works in mysterious ways.
More about "Pastor" Anderson
Seems he got Tasered by the Feds not long ago at a border inspection station.
http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2009/04/phoenix_pastor_claims_abuse_at.php
That might explain things a bit.
How many times have I said that there is but a hairsbreadth of difference between a Christian fundamentalist and an Islamic fundamentalist???
Think I'm kidding? Go check out some of the so-called "Christian" blogs on the chron.
Be prepared to lose your appetite over the hatred espoused by those good "Christians".
Well! I blame Ronald Reagan! He is the one who let the crazies out when he closed the state mental hospitals! Those crazy people reproduced and look what we are stuck with now! People who are double crazy! This is what happens when people don't take their meds! All the more reason to pass health care reform. Isn't there some way we can pass out free lithium like they pass out free condoms? Perhaps an exchange system like for IV needles. Bring in a bullet or gun part, get a pill in return.
I tell you, the similarities between the most violent and deluded of the Christian right and the Muslim right can be downright scary. What, did this guy study at a Christian madrassa or something?
He's probably lacking a high school diploma also.
Can we say, "cult leader"?
It is SOOOOO sad that there are SOOOOOO many people who are desperate for somebody to tell them what to think and how to feel. Give somebody the gift of gab, a pulpit, and the title "pastor" and you people will flock to the door to listen to their drivel. People, people who need people, can be the easiest people in the work to lead and fool.
Pastor Anderson's "church" is a storefront in a retail strip center in Tempe, Arizona, next to the Maxit Pawn Shop, as it turns out.
Notice also that Anderson doesn't use the title "Reverend", because that would, in most states, require him to be ordained by some recognized entity.
Anybody can use the word "pastor". I mean, even Joel Osteen, also not a college grad, calls himself that.
The upshot of this story is that anyone can call himself a Christian, claim to be a preacher, organize what he calls a church and actually get folks to pay him to publicly demonstrate that he is an asshole.
If you go to the TPM article, down towards the bottom of the page there's a link to his blog. You might try to leave a comment there.
This from Pastor Anderson's bio on the church web site
"Pastor Anderson holds no college degree but has well over 100 chapters of the Bible committed to memory, including almost half of the New Testament."
No shit.
Turns out Pastor Anderson's email box is already full. Darn.
I'll try to find a fax number. This jerk deserves to be flooded with mail.
I'm with you there, stex. As one who attended parochial school and thought admission to an ICU was the only legitimate excuse to miss church on Sunday, I concluded several years back that organized religion was no longer for me. My experience did not include such hate, but the unmitigated hypocrisy was just too much to stomach.
I often wonder what effect being exposed to "Christians" like Steven Anderson has on the moral compass of his congregation? I think it would skew it considerably . . .
Are there people like this in churches?
Absolutely.
I was married to one like this for years.
People like this are why neither of my sons have anythng to do with organized religion. It breaks my heart. Freaks like this do not represent ME.
More than anything else, it just makes me sad. As much as I would like to, I can't hate people like that because then I become them. Yet, we can't ignore it either. I read stuff that is teetering towards that everyday and I just don't understand it. It is bothersome on so many levels. For one, you have an obvious threat to Obama. Secondly, you have an obvious threat to Christianity in general.
I know many of you do not follow baseball. I do, and have since I was 5 years old. But that's not what I am gonna talk about, mostly.
That which is relevant HERE is what happened when Hank Aaron approached and then broke Babe Ruth's homerun record. Much was not discussed until fairly recently. Aaron didn;t talk about it much. Neither did his wife. But recent interviews revealed what a "hell of a life" Aaron and his family endured for almost a year. Death threats to him and his family. SERIOUS SHIT! SICK SHIT! The kind of stuff that (I would like to think) earns you a non-stop trip to hell with NO rest stop in purgatory.
Well....if people will get that upset over a damn homerun record, we shouldn't be too awfully surprised when they woke up on January 21 to find a black man and his family in the White House.
I am afraid this is not gonna get any better. It might get worse. The "exposure" these maniacs and morons are receiving is simply providing them with validation. And that validation is DANGEROUS.
Am I concerned? No, I am afraid. And I have been afraid ever since Novemnber 5th. This is a BIG country. Lots of totally insane people. Va Tech, Columbine, Any night on the news somebody kills his family and then himself. Last night, just down the street from me, two peopole shot dead. And ya know, that ain't even unusual in Alief anymore.
Well, having attended some churches as a guest, I was turned off by the blatant hypocrisy and just plain stupidness of some of the people. No common sense and no ability to rationalize or think. Very close minded.
I will say, I am a Catholic although I hardly attend church on a regular basis, I have attended recently my parish church in Sugar Land. I have found most of the congregation to be very supportive of Obama and HC reform. Abortion seems to be of most concern but most people are accepting of the fact that some type of abortion funding is necessary in any reform bill. Even the CHA has come out in support of Obama and his efforts to reform HC. It's plainly obvious to so many what needs to happen. I'm not sure of the difference between Catholics and non-Catholics on this issue but generally, I feel more comfortable in the Catholic church than these other "mega Christian" churches where they appear to just follow the leader.
Why is he NOT is police custody? i thought threatening a President was a crime. Or is it NOT a crime when you just PRAY for assassination and hope that some lunatic carries it out so you can claim it as your answered prayer.
Jesus would role over in his grave (were he still in it).
Just another reason I no longer feel I should attend or belong to a church. They gone beyond "Preachin for Dollars", to spewing their extreme hatred from the pulpit. What happened to spreading the word of the bible ? This type of hatred in the church has become epidemic, it has spread form the wingnuts to the pulpit.
Pardon me while I go throw up.
By the way, if you want to let Pastor Anderson know how you feel, he can be contacted at Info@faithfulwordbaptist.org. I don't often use the word "asshole" in an email, but it seemed to fit Pastor Anderson so well.
sssssssssssss........ Makes me want to change my avatar back to the werewolf and go stalking!
I hadn't heard this guy before, but he makes me ill.
And note the deafening silence from Republican leaders, who apparently now fear the angry mob of ignorant and hateful fascists they have created.
My sister and I disagree about this. I think that if churchgoers were honest about their own views, you'd find a fair amount of this ignorance and hatefulness in just about any right wing church, including several mainstream denominations.
Steven Anderson and Wiley Drake are perfect examples of why I don't do organized relegion. They have distorted and twisted some of the basic teachings of christianity.
I have read and listened to this crap and I believe this is much more than just "Christian" right wingers spewing their hate filled vitrol.
Our country has entered a very dangerous time where brother has turned against brother -- our house has become divided, and I am not certain that we will be able to bridge the chasm.
Sad and frightening indeed.
BTW, I do hope that the Secret Service is keeping a very close eye on this one.
Makes me glad I'm the heathen that I am. If that's their definition of "Christian," we're in big trouble.
Truly unbelievable! They have no shame. I am sick of these so called "Christians" and their ignorant, hate filled rants against the president. Can't they go away somewhere and leave all the sane Americans alone? Haters!
Jesus, these people who call themselves "Christian" are an embarrassment.
I am so sick of their bullshit.
They obviously haven't paid attention. Jesus said, "Love your neighbors" and "pray for your enemies". They have interpreted that to being "I'll love my neighbor as long as he's lily-white, fundamentalist, conservative, believe the earth was formed 6,000 years ago and kisses Sarah Palin's ass".
I hope they all rot in hell.
